Collection of oddly helpful tips a real keeper

Anyone who has a computer will most likely have a special folder for either “keepers” or “favourites.” I hadn’t looked in my “keepers” folder for sometime but last week I wanted a family photo that I knew was in there somewhere and I did find it but also found the following tips under WHO KNEW and decided to pass some of them on to you. It was sent to me back in November 2009 and I guess at the time it was worth saving.
- Did you know that Colgate toothpaste makes an excellent salve for burns? An extra tip came from my son while he was visiting last week when I burned my thumb on the oven rack. He said put it under running cold water immediately for a few minutes and it will keep it from blistering and take away the sting. Then, administer the salve or whatever you’re using to heal it. It worked.
- Achy muscles from a bout of the flu, or just achy muscles? Mix one tablespoon of horseradish in 1 cup of olive oil. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes, then apply it as a massage oil for instant relief for aching muscles. Boy, this is something I can use.
- Sore throat? Winter is coming and this just might come in handy. Just mix 1/4 cup vinegar with 1/4 cup honey and take one tablespoon six times a day. The vinegar kills the bacteria.
- Easy eyeglass protection... to prevent the screws in eyeglasses from loosening, apply a tiny drop of clear nail polish to the threads of the screws before tightening them.
- Honey remedy for skin blemishes... cover the blemish with a dab of honey and place a bandage over it. Honey kills the bacteria, keeps the skin sterile, and speeds healing. Works overnight, they say.
-Listerine therapy for toenail fungus: Get rid of unsightly toenail fungus by soaking your toes in Listerine mouthwash. The powerful antiseptic leaves your toenails healthy again. I do know someone who did this, though she just had a suggestion of mild fungus but it cleared right up, so go for it.
- Smart splinter remover. I can’t count the times I pulled slivers out for my kids and the screaming that went on. The suggestion is to pour a drop (how do you pour a drop?) of Elmer’s Glue-All over the splinter, let it dry, and peel the dried glue off the skin. The splinter sticks to the dried glue.
- Quaker Oats for fast pain relief...it’s not just for breakfast! Mix two cups of Quaker Oats and 1 cup water in a bowl and warm it in the microwave oven for 1 minute, cool slightly and apply to your hands for soothing relief from arthritis pain.
There was more but this will do for now as I have a great suggestion for turkey salad from the Ontario Turkey Farmers.
Cooking in the summer can be a unique challenge. Luckily, Heather from Turkey Farmers Ontario says this recipe is the solution for hot days, using your grill outside. Turkey tenderloins, cutlets, boneless breasts and burgers are all delicious this way.
Tomato with Spicy Turkey Salad
1 cup diced cooked turkey fillets
1/4 stalk celery, diced
2 tbsp. red onion, finely diced
1/4 cup grapes, halved
2 tbsp. cilantro, finely chopped
1/2 cup slivered almonds toasted (save half for garnish)
1/4 cup low-fat yogurt
1 tsp. curry powder
1/4 cup lemon juice
pinch each salt and pepper
4 medium vine tomatoes
In medium bowl combine cooked diced turkey, celery, onions, grapes, cilantro and half the almonds. In a separate bowl stir together yogurt, curry powder, and lemon juice, add to turkey mixture and gently fold together. Season to taste.
To prepare tomatoes, slice off the top about 1/4 inch down. Run a small paring knife around the pulp leaving the outside of the tomato intact. Using a spoon, remove seeds and discard to form a tomato bowl.
Divide the turkey filling between the four tomatoes. Top with remaining almonds and a sprig of cilantro. Serve on mixed greens and simple vinaigrette. Serves four, but can be easily doubled.
A dessert to make when you do have the oven on when the weather gets cooler - or  make early in the day and warm when needed.
The recipe is for two servings but the topping can be doubled to make for four.
Apricot Crisp
1 can (8-3/4 ounces) apricot halves, drained
3 tbsp. brown sugar
2 tbsp. all-purpose flour
2 tbsp. oatmeal
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg
4 tsp. cold butter
vanilla ice cream
Arrange apricot halves in a sprayed baking dish. In bowl, combine the brown sugar, flour, oats, cinnamon and nutmeg. Cut in butter until mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle over top of apricots, bake uncovered at 375 degrees for 20 minutes or until golden brown. Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
