Off-leash canine fun is only a few days away, as the town’s first designated dog park will be ready for use by week’s end.
While many have been using the park near Junction Station in the town’s north end for the past few weeks, it will be officially ready by the end of the week, reports Tim Wolfe, the town’s parks manager.
Patrons will notice the park’s borders have been expanded, now encompassing a bush to the north.
Wolfe explains that a marking error lead to the park’s initial small size. To make the bush area more welcoming, wood chips will be laid on pathways, and some small holes in the lawn will be filled as well.
Also going up by week’s end? Signs asking users to stoop and scoop any messes left by their pets. “We’re even supplying bags for owners to do it,” says Wolfe.
Wolfe adds that the town is monitoring the park daily to determine what usage rules might be required -- such as times for large and small dogs. A volunteer committee is being formed to oversee the park; those interested in joining, or who have suggestions, can call Wolfe at 519-284-3240, ext. 352.
In the meantime, there are general guidelines for usage. These are:
-dogs must remain on-leash until they are in the double-gated area;
-children 12 and under must be supervised by an adult;
-dogs must have current vaccinations; and
-owners must be able to control their dog by voice and key an eye on their pet.
When the full rules are determined, they will be posted at the park’s entry.
When asked about the delays on the park’s opening (it was originally scheduled to open a month ago), Wolfe said that all of the activities in July -- from Homecoming, Heritage Festival, Summerfest and a number of ball tournaments “really tied the parks department up -- it’s a very busy month for us.”
