WINDSOR – For the second consecutive year, Rick Fifield has finished sixth in the province in Senior men’s golf.
At the Investors Group Ontario Senior Men’s Amateur championship, hosted by Ambassador Golf Club last Wednesday to Friday, the St. Marys Golf and Country Club general manager/owner fired rounds of 70, 75 and 73 in the 54-hole event.
Fifield finished seven shots behind winner Michael Jackson, of Collingwood. The Georgian Bay Club member and 2009 runner-up shot a final day, four-under-par 67 to claim a two-shot victory over Alasdair Cayley, of Burlington (72-72-69).
Jim Craigmile, a long-time St. Marys G&CC member, finished in a tie for 21st. The Oakville resident carded rounds of 74, 76 and 75 and was 12 shots behind Jackson.
Fifield’s opening-round 70 left him in a tie for second place with two London golfers. London resident Peter Aharan was the first-day leader with a 69.
Fifield started Friday’s final round just three shots behind leader Lars Melander, of Oakville, who finished third overall (72-70-72). Craigmile was eight back going into Friday’s third round.
The tournament serves as a qualifying event for the Canadian Senior Men’s championship, hosted this year at St. Thomas Golf and Country Club from Aug. 30 to Sept. 3. Team Ontario will consist of Jackson, Cayley, Melander and fourth-place finisher Tom Hodgins, of Newmarket (73-70-73).
The Investors Group Ontario Senior Men’s Championship is contested annually and features Ontario’s best male amateur golfers, age 50 and older. 2010 marks the 75th playing of the event.
The event also determines the Ontario 60+ and Ontario Super Senior (70+) champions.
