Boyd qualifies for WOSSAA
WINGHAM - The DCVI Senior badminton team competed in the Huron-Perth
championships here Thursday, April 17.
Most of the team struggled early on in the day, with only Brandon Boyd
winning his first match. All other competitors lost, and were relegated to
the losers’ side of the bracket.
Tristan Dundas and Claire Jackson were able to win one match before being
eliminated. The rest were not so fortunate.
The lone Saluki to win a few matches was Brandon Boyd. He beat competitors
from Northwestern and St. Mikes, before losing a three-game marathon to a
Central Huron (Clinton) player.
Playing three matches back to back, a tired Boyd was able to pull off two
more victories, before losing again to the same player from Central Huron.
Often going with no rest between matches, Boyd was overhead saying that he,
“is a machine.”
WOSSAA in Strathroy
Finishing a respectable third in the tournament, Brandon Boyd was the lone
Senior Saluki to qualify for the WOSSAA championships, held in Strathroy on
Tuesday, April 22.
Boyd played his first match against an opponent from London’s Clarke Road
Secondary School. As has been the norm all season, Boyd got off to a slow
start, but re-grouped in the second game to force a third, ‘winner-take-all’
match.
Unfortunately, he lost by a close margin, 21-19.
In his second game, Boyd faced a player from Parkside Collegiate. Both games
in this match were close, but the Saluki lost the first by a close margin,
and the second by a score of 22-20.
This was Boyd’s second trip to WOSSAA for badminton as he qualified for the
Junior competition two years ago in the Men’s Doubles division.
Junior pair qualifies
In Junior at Wingham Apr. 21, the DCVI doubles team of Adam Cornwall and
Nate Cookson made it to the quarter-finals on the ‘A’ side, defeating
Goderich and St. Anne’s.
After losing to South Huron and going to the ‘B’ side, Cornwall and Cookson
continued to advance into the final four. In their final match, against St.
Mikes, the pair played well, but lost two close games, by just three points
altogether.
Cookson and Cornwall, however, did qualify for the WOSSAA championships in
London Tuesday, Apr. 29.
