A hot putter helped John Lind shoot a three-over-par 75 and win the overall 2008 Junior Club championship last Tuesday, Aug. 26 at St. Marys Golf and Country Club.
The 16-year-old Lind, a first-year member at the St. Marys golf club, made birdie putts on No. 6, 9 and 12 during his 37-38 round.
Lind, a four-handicapper, lives north of London.
Playing in the same foursome, Lind had a close battle going all day with Jon McPhail.
McPhail needed to birdie the No. 18 hole and keep the pressure on Lind, but ended up with a double bogey 6.
“I needed to make birdie on that last hole,” McPhail commented.
However, McPhail still fired a fine 78 (39-39) for the day, and the lefthander easily capture the 17-18 boys age division.
Five age groups
Altogether, there were winners in five age groups.
Brett Dill won the 10-and-under division with an 18-hole score of 128 (68-60).
Brady St. Louis topped the 11-and-12 age group with a 101 (55-46).
Winning the 13-14 age group was Jesse De Groote, who fired an 89 (45-44).
With Lind taking overall honours, Andrew Davis was awarded first in the 15-16 age group. Davis had splits of 47-39 for an 86 total. Brett Hyatt (47-43-90) was second, and Jeff Griffiths (53-43-96) was third.
Finishing behind Jon McPhail in the 17-18 division were Tyler Rae (92) and Mike Davis (93).

•All participants received lunch and a prize at the end of the day.
•The day’s most casual group was Brett Hyatt, Jeff Griffiths, Winston Smink and Andrew Davis. They all golfed in their bare feet.
•Kellen Fifield won the Jr. Club title the past three years, but was too old to play in this year’s event.
