The third annual Ceremony of the Flags will begin at 9 a.m. at St. Marys Cemetery this Saturday, Nov. 7. Families with loved ones buried at the cemetery are invited to place a small Canadian flag at their graves; those with family members buried elsewhere can lay the flags at the Stone of Remembrance.
“The mere fact that they had been willing to serve, wherever they might be sent, was and is proof enough that they are deserving of special honours, on or near Remembrance Day,” says Hahn.
Over the past three years, 414 names have been registered at town hall to participate in the solemn ceremony; this year, Hahn says he hopes to see all 500 flags planted at graves in “a truly touching tribute.”
There will be volunteers, including representatives from the Royal Canadian Legion and Army Navy and Air Force club at the cemetery to help find grave sites.
The flags will remain for a few days, at least until after Remembrance Day, Nov. 11.
