The Campbell Soup Co., Ltd. poultry processing plant at Rannoch, just west of St. Marys, prides itself in maintaining high standards of quality both from a health-safety perspective and in an effort to ensure consumer satisfaction. Quality control Brian Anderson says the Campbell’s policy is to set tolerance levels more stringent than those required by government regulations. The plant was built in 1969 and expanded in 1973. There are physical divisions within the plant to protect against cross-contamination.

When the St. Marys Town Hall was built, provision was made in the basement for the fire apparatus and this was housed there for many ears until a full-team team was bought. Then, because there was no stabling in the Town Hall it was decided to build a new fire hall. This hall has now fallen into disrepair and it will take some money to fix it up properly. Not only that but the fire hall is very hard to heat in winter and, as it is necessary to keep the truck warm at all times to ensure prompt starting of the engine, the heating proposition is an important consideration. It is suggested that with the new heating plant in the Town Hall, it would be much easier to help the truck warm in the Town Hall basement and also the truck would have a better place to get out of than it has in the old fire hall.

The J. D. Moore Co., has large gangs of men harvesting ice for their new Cold Storage Plant. The ice is being taken from the river above the Carter Dam and drawn on sleighs to a destination where it is hauled by carrier, operated by electricity. By means of a mechanical conveyance, horses and pulleys, the cakes of ices are loaded into the sleigh from the river without being handled. Over a hundred loads were day are being taken out but several thousand will be required for next season’s supply and a couple of weeks more work will be required to complete the harvest.
